Greenhouses

My memories of South-Eastern Ontario landscape has rolling hills, lake views, dairy cattle, and mixed farms. Now, as I reside in South-Western Ontario, the ever-expanding greenhouses fill the agricultural landscape.

As of 2021, there are now some 3,000 acres ‘under glass’ all around Leamington and Kingsville. The semi-translucent greenhouse’s various forms, generations, and styles have piqued my interest.

About 85 percent of Ontario’s greenhouse production is in the Leamington-Essex County area. The area refers to itself as the ‘sun parlour.’ Many of these farms began as family farms and have since expanded to be highly financed corporations

This is industrial farming at its most optimized. Tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, flowers, and most recently cannabis, grow vertical, around three stories.

Yet, for architectural production to be effective, hand labour is still required. In this instance, the hands of the Mexican migrant workers.
