Lift is a collaborative work produced with Joshua Babcock for the 2017 Windsor-Essex Triennial of Contemporary Art. Large photographs are attached to the three elevator doors that open into public gallery spaces. The photographs are locations in the Carolinian forest of Point Pelee National Park and Ojibway Park.
Inside the elevator the recorded sound of birds plays and flow out when the doors open. The sound equipment is enclosed in a box reminiscent of a bird house, made by Joshua Babcock. The Windsor-Essex area is a significant migratory bird flyway, and the birdsong is of birds that regularly settle in the area.
As the theme of the Triennial is urban renewal, our focus is on the urban and nearby park forests that support a diverse ecosystem of endangered flora and fauna. The Carolinian Forest is under significant threat from human habitation and the Windsor-Essex area has less than eight percent forest coverage, the lowest percentage in Ontario.
